Clifton A. Baldwin, known from Mexico to the Yukon as Cliff, was a pioneer prospector, explorer and character who led an adventurous life which carried him to almost every mining boom over the 60 years prior to his death.

He built one of the first theatres in Rossland, had a hotel in Stewart, and another in Goldfield, Nevada.

He was an early pioneer in the Portland Canal region as, in 1910, he organized a company in Vancouver to develop the Roosevelt property on Bitter Creek.

He also located north of Bridge River, in what was known as the Taseka Motherlode.

It was there that Lady Luck smiled upon him, as a large snowslide killed an entire crew in their sleep, Cliff's cabin being just out of range.

In his later years, he settled down at Seton Lake, dying in Vancouver in 1937 after an adventurous 83 years.
